For seven years, I wrote a blog called GoozNews on Healthcare that drew a fairly wide and influential audience. I discontinued the blog after returning to Chicago in 2012 to edit Modern Healthcare magazine, the leading trade journal in the healthcare space.
Since becoming a weekly columnist for MH, I have sent my columns to a limited list of healthcare practitioners, experts, family and friends. These weekly emails have also included my various writings for other publications.
Today, I am relaunching GoozNews as a paid subscription email newsletter. It will also appear as a “blog” on the web at GoozNews.substack.com. One weekly email and post will be exclusively available to paid subscribers; some content will continue to be sent to everyone on my current mailing list or those who sign up only for free content.
By subscribing, you are showing your support for independent, fact-based journalism and informed progressive commentary from someone who has more than 40 years in the news business and who has followed healthcare closely for more than 20 years. I hope everyone will consider subscribing.
Why support my independent journalism
As noted above, the previous incarnation of GoozNews drew an influential audience. I attribute that to the fact I brought a well-informed, progressive, issue-oriented mindset to every piece I wrote. I also took on the special interests that dominate the field, which supposedly puts the health and well-being of people ahead of profit.
The relaunched GoozNews, while continuing to primarily focus on healthcare, will also tap my experiences from a long and varied career in journalism. Before joining Modern Healthcare in 2012, I spent 15 years working in the nation’s capital, learning the ins and out of how our government operates. Before that, I spent seven years living in Tokyo and New York as a foreign and national correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. Over those years, I’ve covered a wide array of business, economic, environmental, labor and social topics.
I left the Tribune to write a book about the pharmaceutical industry. Though it came out in 2004, it is still in print and you can a copy here: “The $800 Million Pill: The Truth About the Drug Industry.”
In my semi-retirement, I continue to write a thrice-monthly column for Modern Healthcare, which I will share here. I have also begun writing occasional pieces for mainstream publications and political magazines like Democracy: A Journal of Ideas and the Washington Monthly.
The relaunch of GoozNews as a paid newsletter serves two purposes:
It will allow me to expand my commentary to the wider range of subjects where I have expertise; and
It will provide me with your direct feedback. I need to know if you value this work. The only way I can determine that is by having paid subscribers.
I have deliberately set the price point — $5 a month or $30 a year — at the lowest prices allowed by the Substack platform. Your support signals that you value the perspective I bring to these troubled times.
Sincerely,
