Millions of people are gathering today in thousands of cities, towns and hamlets across America to protest the illegal and cruel actions of the Trump regime.
High on their list of grievances is the devastation the Republican Congress, at Trump’s behest, is visiting on the health care system, in particular, the part that serves the poor (Medicaid) and low and moderate income workers (Obamacare).
Congress has been shut down for nearly three weeks now. Republicans refuse to relent and change the parts of their One Big Ugly Bill that will take away government-supported health insurance plans from millions of people to give tax breaks to the well-to-do. The Democrats’ central demand before ending their filibuster and reopening the government is restoring the trillion dollars of cuts to Medicaid that will take place over the next decade and renewing the subsidies for Obamacare plans sold on the exchanges to individuals and families without workplace coverage.
To discuss the issues behind the standoff, I invited onto the podcast this week Anthony Wright, the Executive Director of Families USA. Families USA is a coalition of consumer leaders, advocates, and partner organizations that are located in every state and the District of Columbia. Fifteen years ago, the group led the grassroots fight to create Obamacare. Today, it is in the forefront of the fight to reverse the Trump administration’s vicious cuts.
Give a listen. His perspective on what’s going on in Washington and in the 50 states is worth a half hour of your time.
