The weekend events in Los Angeles remind us that the fight to preserve the nation's inadequate social safety net is part of the broader fight to defend democracy.
“But protests are not enough. Only an engaged citizenry can defeat the reactionary forces here at home that threaten the values that truly made America great: equality, fairness, compassion, and equal justice before laws that everyone, including the president of the United States, adheres to.” — YES! And you are right to target the assault on health care. But even that is unlikely to sway a broad enough segment of the population. We, as a society, have long been indifferent to the lack of affordable, accessible health care for the poor and have tolerated up to 18%-20% of our population without health care insurance.
I think we need to really double-down on sharing the stories of just regular people being brutalized and terrorized by this new stage of militarization of the coup. I think Gov. Newsom has it right to emphasize the personal stories of just regular kids, parents, grandparents being terrorized, assaulted, and kidnapped in schools, graduations, etc., etc., by military-outfitted and masked ‘secret police’ thugs.
I thought it amusing that the Senate rethugs decided there was waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicare and Social Security and they will root them out to help fund the tax cuts for the oligarchs…
