Since passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, Medicare has launched numerous experiments aimed at improving the quality of care while lowering overall program costs. It was dubbed the value-based care movement. Some programs succeeded and have been embraced by a growing number of hospitals and and physician practices. Others failed and have been abandoned.
With a new administration hell bent on dismantling much of the progress achieved over the past decade in health care, I reached out to Dr. Farzad Mostashari to get his take on what is happening now. He headed the Office of the National Coordinator during the Obama administration and helped spread electronic medical records throughout the health care ecosystem. After leaving government service, he launched Aledade, a private firm aimed at helping primary care practices adopt payment reforms that promote value-based care.
